What do we do?

The Curriculum team focuses on supplementing the existing Data Science Curriculum by building DS modules, small explorations into an exciting dataset for a domain. Student teams meet with professors over the course of a semester to build a scalable lesson for a current or future class based on the professor’s research. These modules help teach students, often with no background in coding, the tremendous power that analytics have on a field while also inspiring them to explore further - both in coursework and research.

Team Lead | Alexander Ivanoff
I am currently a Junior studying Cognitive Science and Statistics with a focus on Data Science. I started working with DSEP last spring on the Outreach team, and since then have created and led the curriculum team to develop resources and lessons for people all over campus who are interested in Data Science.

Political Data Team

Team members worked with Professor Amy Tick in the Rhetoric Department to teach students the important of voter turnout by using multifactor analysis and predictive methods to understand demographic trends. Unlike traditional modules, these team members attended class and hosted office hours where they led analyses in front of the entire class as well as helped students conduct research on the data independently.

I’m a third year at Cal studying Computer Science, and am passionate about contributing to education – whether through teaching, creating materials, or developing educational platforms! Through my work with the Curriculum team, I combine this passion with the exciting and growing field of Data Science.

Aditya Sheth
I am a first-year intended physics/computer science double-major! I joined the Berkeley Institute of Data Science Curriculum Team because I love the power and elegance of data; being part of the Curriculum team allows me to aid educators in spreading the true beauty and capabilities of data science!

Tracy Chen
I am a third year at Cal and an EECS major. I decided to join the curriculum team because I wanted to be able to help integrate data science lessons into more courses at Cal and allow more students to gain exposure to it.

Criminology Team

Team members worked with Professor Jon Marshall and Dag Macleod from the CA Dept. of Justice for DR.Macleod’s upcoming connector course on Criminal Studies. Students worked on compiling and building resources for the course by reviewing course material and helping with data preparation.

I’m a 2nd year majoring in Computer Science, and I joined the Curriculum team because I'm extremely passionate about data science and I found Data 8 very rewarding. In the future, I hope to utilize the full potential of statistical analysis and big data sets to improve user experience across all types of applications.

Muying Chen
I joined the Data Science Curriculum Team because I am very interested in data science and passionate about education. With my technical skills and teaching experience, I am excited to contribute to the data science education program and the Berkeley community with my curriculum team throughout the school year and beyond.

Abby Hersh
Hi my name is Abby and Im a 4th year Cognitive Science Major. Data Science is a really important field relevant to all areas of study. I joined the BIDS curriculum team because I want to help other students who don't know much about Computer Science learn Data Science and be able to apply it to their own studies.

Andrew Dildy
I’m a third year studying Cognitive Science and Computer Science, and I joined the curriculum team to integrate Data Science education into a diverse range of departments across campus. I'm particularly interested in social media data and applying Data Science to traditionally non-technical fields.
